I didn’t see you wearing any.” Walking to the bedroom, he answers without turning around, “Oh, no. I just didn’t wear any.” Now he turns and smiles at me. But the smile doesn’t reach his eyes. “Wassup?” I ask. He looks like his mind’s somewhere else. His smile fades, and he sits on the bed. “Ah, my brother. He just doesn’t like most people. KMB + JTN chapter 10A hand grabs mine, and pulls me sideways, then upwards. I break the surface, but I don’t breathe. I’m aware of what’s happening, but it’s like a mind-body separation. I’m laid out on my back on flat, dry land. I feel hands on my chest, someone’s doing CPR. They listen for my heartbeat, and I don’t know what they hear or don’t hear.
